The Dirigo Belt Axe is individually hand-forged in South Portland, Maine to Brant and Cochran's exacting standards. This heirloom-quality axe has a 1.75 pound axe head with a Maine wedge shape on a 17-inch hand-turned hickory wood handle. Included with the Dirigo is a Maine-made leather sheath to cover the extremely sharp edge while you're relaxing by the fire or hiking to the campsite.

The Dirigo can be stashed in a pack for use on the trail or at the campfire, stored beside your fireplace for splitting wood and kindling during the long winter, and used around the fire pit. The head's razor sharp edge is forged into a Maine wedge pattern, heat-treated to a Rockwell hardness of 56-58, and honed to be "wicked" sharp, as they say in Maine.

Brant and Chochran axes were named among of the four best axes in the world by Field and Stream magazine.

To create this exceptional axe, axe makers forge, grind and sharpen the axe head by hand. Each one is then stamped with the Brant and Cochran logo, the initials of the axe maker, and the year the axe was made. Finally, it is heat treated, fine-tuned and sharpened for use.

Once the axe head is ready, it is hafted, or attached to the handle, which is an Amish-turned hickory wood handle designed by Brant and Cochran. The handle is then conditioned, waxed, and put into the sheath for shipping.
